This site is currently running DNN 4.9.5 and I am able to exclude roles and modify settings without issue. I will setup a test DNN 4.9.1 site and test the module against that version. In the meantime, could you please provide the entire exception details from the event viewer in DNN if there is one.

The error you are reporting appears to be AJAX \ Javascript related. What browser are you using when you are making these changes? Also what version of .Net are you running DNN on, 2.0 or 3.5?

Please provide as much information as possible so that I may try to recreate the problem. You may also try creating a new "hidden" page on your site with no other modules and using the default DNN skin. The try to modify the module on that page. It almost sounds like you have other modules or your skin that may be causing the module to break.
